Waterproofing and DWR in Snowboarding Jackets

Waterproofing is the single most important element of a snowboard jacket. Measured in a water column, the rating of a jacket refers to how much water the jacket can withstand before the shell is penetrated. The higher the number, the more waterproof the jacket. Snow jackets usually have a 2L outer shell, which consists of a DWR treated outer fabric layer with an inner membrane which stops water getting through. Some jackets have a 3L shell, with an extra layer bonded to the inside to protect the membrane, offering superior protection.

Breathability and Insulation

Breathability is key in a snowboarding jacket and determines how much sweat in the form of water vapour can be let out through the fabric. Jackets designed for resort use may have a lower breathability rating, while those designed for freeriding may have a higher rating as the type of snowboarding is more strenuous. Get The Right Jacket

An insulated jacket is generally good for cooler conditions, and first-time or holiday riders who want to keep things simple as you can often just wear a base layer or t-shirt and midlayer under it.
