Most popular ski resorts in the world | Ridestore Magazine

If you’re envisioning your dream ski or snowboard holiday, you’re probably thinking about the steeps of Verbier, the endless bowls of Colorado, or maybe even that Japanese champagne powder. We know we are.

Whether you’re hitting the slopes for the very first time, or you were slashing turns before you could walk, we’ve all been guilty of spending a few too many hours scouring the internet for our next snowbound adventure.

We gathered search data from USA, Canada, and twelve European ski-obsessed countries in order to determine a global popularity leaderboard, along with creating local leaderboards for each analysed country too.

After all, if you live in the Alps or BC, Canada, why would you even want to travel to ski? But, for the rest of us who live in the UK or other snow-sparse places, we don’t really have another option but to travel.

We found lots of interesting data — some names we anticipated, others were a total surprise. But if nothing else, what this exercise did teach us, is that it’s never too early to get excited about your next ski or snowboard trip (Covid-19 permitting of course!).

Data collection methodology

Popularity percentage explained

Beside each entry in brackets is a popularity percentage. This is the number of Google search queries for an entry divided by the total number of search queries for all entries and then expressed as a percentage.

How we collected the data

We used the Keyword Explorer Tool at ahrefs.com to find the average monthly Google search volume for 1903 of the world’s most popular ski resorts across 14 ski and snowboard obsessed countries. To qualify to be included, the resort must have at least 10km of prepared ski slopes.

How does Ahrefs.com search data work

Ahrefs.com’s search volume data that has been collected from clickstream is paired with existing search volume data (from Google Keyword Planner) on a model that gives a very accurate search volume for almost any keyword.

What search terms did we use

We analysed 3 highly relevant google search terms and summed up the total search volume for these terms. These terms were localised into the high volume variant in the languages of the respective countries analysed to ensure a fair and accurate global comparison.

The search terms used were as follows;

1) Name + ski resort , 2) Name + ski, 3) Name + ski pass (UK) or lift tickets (US/CA)
